Gion Uokeya U elevated the eel "Unagi" gastronomy to another level. The restaurant is run by Mr. Kiyoshi Nakagawa, a National Living Treasure ( a unique Japanese distinction only people preserving important and intangible aspects of the culture can receive while alive, someone who perfected their specialty). The shop is a very small Japanese traditional house "machiya" with tatami floors, just one street apart from Gion district. Their menu is quite short and based on eels. Their signature dish ... is the acclaimed "U Oke". The store's basis of success is on the quality of their food but nothing fancy around. Gion Uokeya U has been awarded one Michelin star. NOTE: Reservation is recommended because it is very popular and their opening hours is limited. Our recommendation is for the customer to book at least two weeks in advance on weekdays and a month in advance on weekends and summer. If you are late for 15 minutes or more without notifying the restaurant, the reservation will be automatically cancelled.
